KDS COMMENTARY:
The above family tree has been pieced together from the US Census Records of 1830 - 1850.
This family are the only Skinners to appear in Middlesex Co. in the early 1800's. Their ancestry is unknown. The progenitor of the family seems to be Elizabeth Skinner, wife of an unknown Skinner. She seems to have been living with Phineas Sr. at the time of the 1840 census. Based upon their dates of birth, Phineas would have been her grandson.
This family may represent the only descendants of the many generations of Skinners who lived at Woodbridge and Rahway, Middlesex Co. in the 1700's. Many of that family relocated out of NJ; Others had female offspring.
A 1793 Census of Middlesex Co., not recopied here, shows only two Skinners remaining in the county at that time - Richard and John Skinner. Richard, husband to Jane Clark and son of Captain Richard Skinner, is a well-documented Skinner who later relocated to Ohio with his family. John, an unknown Skinner, likely brother to Richard, may represent the progentor of the Skinners of Middlesex Co. of the 1800's. John is likely the same person recorded as Private John Skinner of the Rev. War, dates of war service unknown.
Per (exhibit-1), Phineas, William and Lewis Skinner were engaged in the manufacture of snuff.

[KDS note - Cornelius and Nathaniel Skinner were said to be brothers-in-law to Benjamin Manning. Perhaps this connection has been carried down to the name of this later Phineas. Or more likely, there were other Skinner/Manning intermarriages as the Manning family was quite large and spread over much of the same locales as the various Skinner branches.]
