NOTES:
Richard Clark 1 -
Charles Carroll Gardner,
in Genealogical Collections 1665-1800, Vol. 29, CLARK, writes:
"Richard Clarke the
founder of the Elizabethtown Clark family and great-grandfather of
Hon. Abraham Clark, signer of the Declaration of Independence, is
first found at Southampton, L.I., in 1661. It has been stated that
Richard Clarke was a grandson of the thirty-sixth signer of the
Mayflower Compact, who bore the same name. This statement is
absolutely incorrect. Bradford's "History of the Plymouth
Plantation", a contemporary work, tells us plainly enough that
Richard Clarke of the Mayflower died soon after the arrival at
Plymouth, without issue. This fact is stated in two different places
in Bradford's work, and can be relied upon as absolutely correct.
There has been no clue to the ancestry of Richard Clarke of Long
Island and New Jersey discovered as yet. The name was an exceedingly
common one, and there were hundreds of Richard Clarkes living in
various parts of England at the time of the settlement of our Richard
on Long Island."
"Richard Clarke was
married about 1660 to Elizabeth _____ but whether the marriage took
place in Southampton or elsewhere does not appear. In 1664 he owned
uplands there bounded by Wm. Oliver, Chas. Ludlow, and Geo. Ross. By
1675, he had removed to Southold, L.I. and about 1678 he took his
family to Elizabethtown, Essex Co., (now Union), N.J. where a party
composed largely of Southampton people (including Clark's former
neighbors Wm. Oliver and Geo. Ross) had settled in 1665. Under date
of Feb. 13, 1679-80, b. Richard Clarke was patented 300 acres of land
in E.T. in right of himself, wife, and children Richard, John and
Elizabeth, they being 14 year olds. On Mar 11, 1685-6, a warrant was
issued to John and Richard Clarke, Jr. for 120 acres each "which
probably was their fathers and mothers and their own two shares, for
which the father had the former patent." In 1694, the name of
Richard Clarke appears as a contributor to the support of Rev. John
Harriman, pastor of the E.T. Church.
"Richard Clarke was
a shipwright. The Will of Wm. Miller of E.T. dated 1711, bequeaths to
son Andrew an interest in "my sloop called Tryall, built by
Richard Clarke." . . . [This collection of C.C.Gardner is found
in N.J. Historical Society, and a Xerox copy is on file in Westfield
N.J. Memorial Library].
Elmer S. Clark was of
opinion that Richard Clarke was the father of Richard Clarke, but we
have found no compelling evidence to substantiate this. In view of
the large number of Richard Clark(e)s found in England, and the fact,
as Savage has pointed out, that there were some 40 different Clark
families who emigrated from England to the colonies, E.S.Clark's
conclusions as to the Richard Clark/Ann Winston parentage has to be
just speculation. Pierson, who was a compiler and not a genealogist,
elected to accept it, but without proofs. The problem is that the
Clark/Winston speculation then had found its way into two separate
volumes, which does not give it substance. (See bottom of this page
for the Bradwell, County Suffolk, England ancestry.) There is also
speculation as to Richard Clarke's origins, prior to his being
"in Southampton, L.I. in 1661," in such places as New
England and the Barbadoes. Again, we have found no documentation for
any of these.
Sources: Charles Carroll Gardner, Genealogical Collections, Vol. 29, CLARK 1665-1800. Photocopies in N.J. Historical Society and Westfield Memorial Library. See also C.C. Gardner cards and volumes in Special Collection Room of Rutgers, The State University of N.J., Library, New Brunswick, NJ. Richard Clarke was the founder of this line of Elizabethtown Clarks, and there are numerous volumes which refer to him. Some of these are undocumented and seem more designed to advance some position, such as trying to tie in a family with the Mayflower, or as a descendant of Abraham Clark, the Signer of the Declaration of Independence. The reader is also cautioned about "Histories" of various counties, which came out in the late 1800s, and which featured biographies of "leading citizens" and often recited their genealogy. These were not really histories or researched, but relied almost solely on what was told them, and then used boiler-plate laudatory lauguage about the men featured, who, of course, were expected to buy the books for their library shelves. We have found the History of Union County, edited by Honeyman, to contain numerous errors, though Honeyman himself had a reputation as a genealogist and historian, but apparently mainly lent his name to that work. [Ref# 41]
Elizabeth _____?
There has been
speculation in print that her maiden name was Moore, but this has not
been documented and was not accepted by Charles Carroll Gardner or
recent genealogists. (See this history at bottom of this page.)
On this, there is an
interesting discussion in Clark & Allied Families, by Field,
(1971) [copy in N.J. State Library, Trenton, N.J.].
"Richard Clark may
have been distantly related to Thomas Moore, or his wife, and in all
probability was indentured to him as an apprentice. Thomas Moore was
a shipwright and a prominent and wealthy individual, and was believed
to have been a cousin or some relative of Sir Thomas Moore. It is
quite possible that Richard Clark was the son of Richard Clark of
Bradwell, Suffolk County, England, the same county from which Thomas
Moore came. Young Richard Clark lived with the Moore family for many
years while learning the ship-building trade. . . .
"He is next heard of
in Southampton, L.I., where he and the Moores had settled by 1661. At
the Town Meeting held 19 November of that year, he was granted the
'first lot at the Oyster Pounds with 60 poles.' He is not listed as
an early inhabitant of Southampton, probably because he was living
with the Moores, who were listed. Sometime in 1660, 1661 or possibly
before, he married an Elizabeth, whose last name is unknown, either
in Salem or after arrival in Southampton. There has been some
discussion as to whether his wife was Elizabeth Moore, the daughter
of Thomas Moore. This does not seem feasible as she was born 31
January 1646/7 which would have made her very young to be married in
1660, and she is supposed to have married Simon Grover, so
Elizabeth's surname remains a mystery. . . ."
[Note: the above
discussion of Richard Clarke living with the Moores is, itself, not
fully documented, but is based by Field on publication by Elmer
Sayres Clark, which has some erroneous conclusions. The discussion of
possible parentage of Richard based upon another Richard Clark living
in Suffolk County, England, being the same county as the Moore
family, is also pure speculation and, while a subject which might be
pursued, is certainly not sufficient to establish any connection at
this time. - Ref# 41 - Harman R. Clark, Jr.]
The following is the origin of the family previously discussed as speculative:
Thomas Clarke, born @1592
Bradwell, County Suffolk, England
married Elizabeth
Goslinge, born @1600 Brohme, County Suffolk, England
Their son:
Richard Clark 2 -
Hannah Norris b. abt 1665
(daughter of Henry Norris & Abigail Stratton of Elizabethtown,
NJ), prob. d. before 1742. She was named in her father Henry Norris'
1706 will as "Hannah Clarke." [Ref# 1] She was probably the
wife of either Richard Clark 2, Ephraim Clark 2 or Thomas Clark 2.
Preference is given to Richard Clark in this compilation because one
son was named Henry.
Henry Norris b. abt 1645
prob. Suffolk County, Long Island, NY, d. May 1706 Elizabethtown,
Essex County, NJ. His wife, Abigail Stratton was the daughter of John
Stratton of Easthampton, Long Island, NY, and was named in his 1684
will as "daughter Abigail, wife of Henry Norris." [Ref# 62]

Richard, Abigail, Elizabeth, Henry, John and Jonathan. Executors -
sons Richard, Henry & Jonathan. Inventory of personal estate
£40.06.05, including bond of Jonathan Clark, made by William
Clark, George Ross. 9/14/1742. Codicil by his son, Richard Clark

and still weak, desire my brothers to act without me." Witness -

At page 15, Gardner
writes: Richard Clark 2, son of Richard and Elizabeth Clark, was born
at Southhampton, L.I. about 1661. He came to E.T. with his father
about 1678 and married a few years later, but the name and parentage
of his wife is not known, although it may have been Hannah Norris. .
. The name Richard 2 Clark appears in 1694 as a contributor to the
support of Rev. John Harriman, pastor of the E.T. church. He was one
of the Second Generation of Elizabethtown Associates, in 1699. In
1701 he signed a petition of the inhabitants of East Jersey asking to
be taken under the government of the King if the proprietors failed
to appoint a suitable Governor. In Feb. 1703-4, Richard, Ephraim and
Samuel Clarke were jurors in the Court of General Quarter Sessions
for Essex County.
Mr. Clark was a ship
carpenter, and probably lived in the western part of the town, out
towards the present town of Westfield. In Mar. 1741-2, he made a
deposition concerning the Elizabethtown land titles, which is printed
in the famous Elizabethtown Bill in Chancery. "Richard Clark,
aged about fourscore years, being Sworn upon the Holy Evangelists
saith, That he hath not one Foot of Land within the Claim of
Elizabethtown, nor is he to his Knowledge, obliged to warrant or
defend any Lands or Interests in any real Estate there. Says that he
has formerly had lands there, but he has conveyed them by Deed of
Gift, Releases or Quit Claims, to his sons and others, some years
ago, and some within a year; and further says that he was born, as he
hath heard, at South-Hampton, on Long Island; and that he was brought
to Elizabeth Town by his Father named Richard Clarke, when he was
between sixteen and seventeen years of Age." Some of the deeds
by which Richard 2 Clark conveyed his lands to others are recorded at Trenton.
Richard Clark "being
very sick and weak" made his will Aug. 17, 1742 and died within
a month. It was not probated until May 17, 1743, possibly on account
of the poor health of his son Richard, who was nominated to be one of
the executors. The instrument mentions land already given by the
testator to his sons, and leaves to daughters, Abigail and Elizabeth,
each "one of my large puter platers." The executors named
were sons Richard, Henry and Jonathon, and the will was witnessed by
Edward Willmott, Edward Giffing & Nathaniel Hubbell. By a note of
May 15, 1743, his son Richard "being sick and weak" desired
to be released from the executorship, and asked that his two brothers
take sole charge of the estate. The inventory of Richard Clark, late
of E.T. Deceased, was taken Sep. 14, 1742, By Wm. Clark and Geo. Ross.

John Clark -
C.C.Gardner, page 21:
John Clark 2, son of Richard and Elizabeth Clark, was born at
Southampton, about 1665. He came to Elizabeth Town and was married
before 1687 to Mary ___, who joined him in deed to Benjamin Griffith
June 25, 1687. He was one of the Elizabethtown Associates in 1699,
and his name appears about the same time on the several petitions to
the King, complaining of the treatment accorded the settlers by the Proprietors.
May 20, 1686 he was
patented 120 acres of land at Rahway, at an annual rental of 1/2 d.
per acre. In 1700 John, Samuel and Thomas Clarke were members of a
party including about sixty of the "Rabbell of
Elizabethtowne" who rescued Samuel Burwell of Newark from the
hands of the constable in 1700. These brothers, however were in good
company, for the party included representatives of nearly all of the
most prominent families of E.T. John Clark married 2. Martha _____
said to have been a Frazee. He made his will Dec. 14, 1702,
appointing his wife, and brother Ephraim executors. To his daughters
Elizabeth and Mary Clark he left a cow apiece, and "also my
brown mare and her increase to be divided between them".
Daughter Martha was to be decently maintained until 18 "and to
have the income of 2/3 of my immoveable estate". The will was
probated June 8, 1705.
Martha (Frazee?), wife of
John Clarke and wife of Joseph Bonnel, on May 8, 1705 gave bond as
executrix of Clarke's will. She married 2. Mr. Bonnel, who later
became a Judge and Mayor of E.T. She was born 1678/9 and died Aug. 3,
1759 in her 81st year. Buried at Union. Judge Bonnel's will dated
174_ mentions daughter-in-law i.e. step-daughter) Martha, wife of
Benjamin Lyn (Lyon). [Ref# 32: Gen.Collections Charles Carroll

the support of the Presbyterian Church there in 1694. His name is
frequently mentioned as petitioner against the Proprietors. In Nov.
1711, he was fined in Essex County for stopping up a road. His will,
dated Aug. 20, 1714, and probated Feb. 9, 1714-5, names his wife
Abigail, and provides that his real estate be divided among his four
sons, the homestead to go to Benjamin and Joshua. The sons were
required to pay 5 shillings to their sister Abigail Powle. Executors:
wife Abigail, brother Ephraim Clarke. [Ref# 32]

C.C.Gardner, page 29: He
was born on Long Island about 1670. He was one of the "Associates
of Elizabethtown" in 1699, and in 1701 contributed a small
amount toward the support of Rev. John Harriman. In the collection of
manuscripts belonging to the New Jersey Historical Society, there is
a deed dated Dec. 3, 1702 from Samuel Clarke of Elizabethtown,
planter, and Susanna, (who signed with her mark) to Thomas Clarke,
also of Elizabethtown, planter, for Samuel's share of the estate of
their father, Richard Clark, deceased. The consideration named is
£10. The will of Samuel Clark, yeoman, was dated at E.T. Nov.
14, 1715., and probated April 11, 1716, and makes his wife Susanna
and his brother Richard Clarke executors. Mention is made of 1/3 of
the plantation late of John Clark, dec'd, bought of his daughter Mary.
Ephraim Clark -
C.C.Gardner, page 33: Ephraim Clark 2, son of Richard and Elizabeth
Clarke was probably born on Long Island about 167#. His name appears
in the list of Associates at Elizabeth Town, and like his brothers
signed the petitions of the inhabitants of East Jersey to the King,
asking for relief from the oppression of the Proprietors. In 1700
Ephraim Clark appeared with a party of friends before the Essex
County Court, while an unpopular civil suit was being tried, and made
such a disturbance that the court was compelled to adjourn. The
members of the disturbing party were indicted for contempt of court,
but no mention is made of any punishment meted out to them. Ephraim
Clark died intestate in 1717, and administration on his estate was
granted on Sep. 16, 1717 to this widow Hannah. Her identity is not
known, but it is possible that she was the daughter of Henry
Norris... The inventory of Mr. Clarke's personal estate was made by
Andrew Hamton and Thomas Johnson Sep. 9, 1717.
[at page 35]: In Nov.
1711, he was indicted in the Essex County Court for stopping up a
road. He pleaded not guilty in Feb. 1711-2, and the indictment was
quashed. On May 6, 1704 Ephraim Clarke and his wife Hannah conveyed
to Isaac Hatfield, a one fifth part of a tract called the "Bloaid
Ridge", inherited from his father. He is presumed to have been
the father of Ephraim Clark, listed above, and perhaps had other
children. [Ref# 32]

"Thomas Clark 2, son of Richard Clark and Elizabeth, was born
1673. In 1701 with his five older brothers he signed a petition of
the inhabitants of East Jersey, to the King, asking to be taken under
the royal government if the Proprietors should fail to appoint a
competent governor. He was one of the subscribers to the support of
Rev. Mr. Harriman in 1700. On May 10, 1707, he and his wife Hannah
deeded to Isaac Hetfield eight acres of land in E.T. On Sept. 13,
1726 James Hamton of E.T. gave to his son-in-law, James Clarke of
E.T. 10 acres of land in E.T. It is supposed that the term
"son-in-law" was used with the meaning of
"step-son" as it frequently was at that period, and that
James Hamton married Hannah, widow of Thomas (2) Clark. Her parentage
is not known, but she may have been the daughter of Henry Norris..."
Benjamin Clark -
Benjamin Clark married
Anne ____?. Gardner says "No true record of desc. yet
discovered." [Ref# 32: Genealogical Collections, Charles Carroll
Gardner, Vol. 29, CLARK]. There are a number of documents in library
files which indicate possible descendants of Benjamin Clarke. But we
have not seen any documentation linking families to this Benjamin,
son of Richard Clarke. It should also be noted that there were other
Clark families, unrelated to Richard Clarke, who were contemporary.
See, for example,
"Notes on the Ancestry of Ann Clarke Who Married John
Cooper" compiled by William A. Cooper, Conshohocken, Pa. 1910.
This relates to a Benjamin Clarke who m. Ann Phipps and who arrived
with his son Benjamin in Amboy, East Jersey, in March 1684.
There are also Family
Group Sheets in files in the Westfield Public Library which speculate
as to Benjamin Clarke, s/o Richard Clarke, being the father of Daniel
Clark, whose Will is found in N.J. Archives, Calendar of Wills
1771-1780, page 92, dated 16 April 1761, proved 8 March 1779, naming
sons Benjamin and Jacob. If that parentage can be established, then
there are new lines from Benjamin as a son of Richard Clarke. We have
not included them at this time.
