KDS COMMENTARY:

Charles Gardner (CCG-18) recorded that James Skinner was born in Hunterdon County. The source of that informatin is not given. The birth location is key as it would tend to link James to the earlier Skinners of Hunterdon and neighboring Somerset Counties - Nathaniel Sr., Cornelius Sr., Richard, Robert and Phinehas.

The families of Nathaniel Sr. and Cornelius Sr. seem to be fairly well documented, and those families relocated out of New Jersey. As a result, I tend to believe that James and the rest of the Morris Co. Skinners descend from one or more of the remaining , presumed brothers - Richard, Robert or Phinehas. One son of Cornelius Sr. - Nathaniel, did appear in Morris Co. in 1770 where he was recorded as marrying Martha Frame. But I have not been able to find any more links between the family of Cornelius Sr. and the Morris Co. Skinners.

James Skinner was born in Hunterdon Co. but later resided in Morris County (war-19). As a result, I tend to believe that he is the progenitor of some of the many Morris Co. Skinners who appear in the records towards the end of the 1700's. Note that (Snell-21) indicated that the Morris Co. Skinners did in fact have Hunterdon Co. roots.

The Morris Co. Skinners are too numerous to represent a single family tree. Most likely, they represent several closely related family lines. I assume that the Morris Co. Skinners are directly related to the Skinners who begin to appear in Somerset, Sussex and Warren Counties towards the end of the 1700's and early 1800's.

This family line is not well-documented. Contact with surviving family members of this line would be very useful.
