Per "Descendants of Richard Alexander Skinner of Loudoun County, VA", by Lester Granville Holcombe, 1972, 10/26/1995/KDS; available at the Church of Latter Day Saints library system, microfilm #1421466. His work is partially based upon the papers of Natalie Fernald, provided to him by his collaboration with Doris S. Wahl (Mrs. Gordon A. Wahl).

 "SKINNERS IN AMERICA

There are several legend about the beginning of the Skinner family in America. There is the familiar story of the proverbial "two brothers who came from the south of Wales", or of the "three brothers, and one of them went back". Our proven ancestor is Cornelius Skinner who resided near Chester at New German-town (now Oldwick) in Hunterdon Co., N.J. from 1740 to 1773 when he and his various relatives removed to Virginia. (Vol. 22, Archives of N.J.)

Probably the first of the names in America were John, Richard, and Joseph Skinner who are said to have been related, although the exact relationship is not certain. Some authorities claim that Richard was the father, and others say that he was the brother of the other two emigrants. They made their homes at Hartford, Conn., as early as the year 1639, and then Joseph late removed to Windsor in the same colony. It seems most probably that Richard was the brother of the emigrant John, and either the father or the uncle of the emigrant Joseph.

The emigrant John Skinner, mentioned in the introduction, and his wife Mary, had a son also named John. They were the parents of seven children: Mary, John, Joseph, Nathaniel, Richard, Sarah, and Thomas. Possibly there were others.

[KDS note - the above Skinner family, which is actually a reference to the John Skinner family of Hartford, CT, is also mentioned in the previous exhibit and needs to be mapped. May be best to review a paper I have not looked at - "The descendants of John Skinner of Hartford, CT and his wife Mary Loomis", by D. S. Wahl, available LDS library system.]

Joseph of Windsor, possibly the son of the emigrant Richard, was married in 1666 to Mary Filley. There were born to them at least two daughters: Mary and Elizabeth, and probably other children at Simsbury where he removed from Windsor about 1670.

One Thomas Skinner emigrated to Malden, Mass., from the county of Sussex, about the year 1649-51, and brought with him from England his wife, Mary, and their children, Thomas and Abraham.

Thomas, eldest son of the emigrant Thomas, married Mary Pratt, and had a son named Thomas in 1668 (grandfather of Nathaniel of Turkeyfoot) at which time his wife died. In 1669, he married a second wife, Mary Gould, who became the mother of John, Richard, Nathaniel, and Abigail Skinner.

Abraham (younger son of the emigrant Thomas) and his wife Hannah were the parents of Abraham, Thomas, Mary, and possibly others.

James Skinner, whose ancestry is not known, settled at Marblehead, Mass., sometime before 1666, and was father of an only son, Richard, who married Alice Woods in 1682. They had children William, Deborah, James, Richard, John, and Elizabeth.

Others of the name who emigrated to America at early dates left few records of themselves and their families; one, Edward, who died in Cambridge, Mass. about 1641; Thomas of Boston died 1673; Walter of Salem, 1680; and Francis, who was commandant of the fort at Remequid in 1683.

One other Skinner family had its beginning in Elizabethtown, N.J. in 1655. [KDS note - should read 1665.] Because our ancestor migrated from N.J. to Virginia, it is believed that he belonged to this Richard and Susanna Poulain family.

Descendants of these branches of the family have spread to practically every state in the Union, ......"
